BEE ACTIVITY IN THE LONG BEACH AREA
The Long Beach area may seem like a strange place for honey bees to live, but beehives are fairly plentiful in the area. They make hives in walls and roofs of homes and they occupy shipping containers and palettes around the harbor. The open spaces in the hills north of whittier and undeveloped stretches along side the San Gabriel river are also bee havens. The bees rely on nectar and pollen from trees and bushes in maintained and irrigated landscapes. The beehives located in the port and in refineries must fly miles to forage for pollen in residential neighborhoods. During peak bee season we get dozens of calls every day from people around Long Beach and Whittier who are in need of bee removal services. Many of the bee problems we see in this area are unique examples of bees finding ways to survive in urban and industrial settings; we have removed beehives from the inside of crane shafts, semi-truck tires and refinery pipelines with waste materials flowing through them.
